California’s SPY were a relatively unknown name until recently, but with this release they’ve certainly made their mark – and a hell of a mark at that. You get four songs here, but what really matters is what kind of songs they are. Pissed-off hardcore packed with anger, venom, and screaming vocals. A thick, heavy sound with plenty of echo and just the right amount of fuzzy distortion. The tempo is mostly mid-paced, so don’t expect the lightness of skate punk – this is more like having boulders dropped on your head. Exactly the kind of music you need when you want to burn off some calories in the mosh pit. Someone barks at you for seven minutes straight, and you might actually be glad it doesn’t last any longer. Meanwhile, there’s already a new release out on LCKR, which is also reviewed here. But for now, pile this one onto your plate. You’ll swallow it in a single bite. Green cassette, green artwork, and your face turning green as the last wave of feedback fades away.
